Back Tracking: What Started it All
My husband and I had slightly different criterias before we had kids. He wanted to have a certain amount of money saved, he wanted to be a little older, basically he wanted to make sure we were completely prepared, and you can't blame a guy for that. I on the other hand really only had one criteria, I wanted to have our first child before I was 26. So as a compromise we started our family with a rottweiler/collie mix. Siba is now 2yrs old, and grew just a little bigger than we originally expected. But even if she's big enough to knock you over, shes a great dog. And she certainly played her part in postponing the baby years. As the baby fever crept back in, I did what any 'good' wife would do...I nagged! I rationalized why we should have and a baby and slipped it into nearly every conversation. I'm still not sure what I said to convince the hubby to start trying, but I remember it was a not so special car ride to Sears that I plead my case yet again, and as we were walking into the store he very nonchalantly agreed to start trying. Color me surprised, who said nagging isn't effective! So we ditch the BC, I buy countless pregnancy tests and we wait, and wait, and wait. Each month I get more discouraged and worried that genetics were against us. The joke of my family is that all my Mom had to do was sneeze and she got pregnant! But on Jeff's side...his parents tried for years before turning to invetro. We had been worried for a while that this might mean trouble for us. I thought about that a lot when test after test would give me the unimpressive reading that yes, they were wet, but I'm not pregnant. Close to a year later I was close to giving up. Close enough to giving up that I stopped paying attention to where I was in my cycle. But as i was packing for my family's annual Father's Day camping trip, I found myself trying to figure out if I needed to pack the amenities to get through those cursed few days. Trying to count backwards I realize I could be a week or even two late! I tell myself that if I make it through the weekend without any discouraging signs I would test yet again. I also, naively think, I'll keep it to myself until I'm sure. Of coarse the hubby notices I'm a little sluggish, a little off in my moods, and a lot distracted, and lets face it my excuses to explain away everything sucked! So at the end of the weekend we race home, and I take yet another home test. Before I even finished my, umm, 'business' the test was starting to show two lines! I sat nervously in the bathroom the full three minutes anyway wanting to make sure before I shared the news with the hubs. We found out we were expecting on Fathers Day. That's a pretty clear sign that Tegan will be Daddy's little girl!
